Remote 3D Printing
Printing from anywhere for academic purposes.
The Innovation Hub is offering 3D Printing services for academic purposes during the COVID campus closure. Because our our very limited staffing, we are forced to limit items that can be printed. Acceptable items to print include class projects, research projects, and student inventions. We are unable to accept print requests for items from web services like thingiverse.com that are not related to academic projects. Faculty should contact fablab@innovation.fsu.edu to coordinate 3D-printing projects for your classes.
Watch the below video to learn how to submit a 3D printing request.
Submitting a 3D Print Request
Remote 3D Printing is made possible through 3DPrinterOS software. After watching the above video, you can submit your 3D printing request by clicking the button below to access 3DPrinterOS, search for Florida State University, and sign in with your FSU credentials. If you have trouble, watch the video above!
Resources to get you started
LinkedIn Learning is a great resource for learning many of the skills exercised in the Innovation Hub and it’s free to the FSU community. Get started with these lessons:
Acquiring Objects to 3D Print
There are several methods for acquiring objects to print: you can download predesigned objects online, design your own objects with 3D design software (also called computer aided design (CAD) software), or you can digitize a real world object with a 3D scanner. Ultimately, the software you use will output a stereo lithography file (.stl) that can be input for a 3D printer. Here are three popular tools in the hub for acquiring 3D objects.
Thingiverse
A 3D model repository with thousands of models free to download and print. Pro tip: make sure the model you are interested in has been successfully printed by others with favorable reviews. Reminder: we are only accepting 3D print request for academic projects.
Tinkercad
The perfect 3D design software for beginners. No more difficult to use than PowerPoint. Free! Tinkercad provides tutorials when you sign up. Additionally, you can try the Tinkercad lesson in LinkedIn Learning.
Fusion 360
This more advanced 3D design software has a bit of a learning curve, but is powerful enough for advanced design needs. The Academic License is FREE! LinkedIn Learning offers Fusion 360 Essential Training.
